Langdon Cheves papers, 1819-1947.

This collection contains papers mainly concerned with family matters; some are of Civil War interest. Included in the collection is a gold pin with a photograph miniature of L.A. Cheves while a student at VMI (Virginia Military Institute), with braided hair in the back, a gold medal awarded by the Howard Medical Corps to Dr. L.A. Cheves in recognition of his services in the yellow fever epidemic in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1878, during which epidemic he died; and an album of photographs of members of the family and friends.

Langdon Cheves (September 17, 1776 – June 26, 1857) was an American politician, lawyer and businessman from South Carolina. He was a U. S. Representative from 1810 to 1815, served as Speaker of the House in 1814–1815, and was president of the Second Bank of the United States from 1819 to 1822.
